MICHAEL CHINAKA, CPA, JOINS THE YMCA OF HONOLULU AS  CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Honolulu, HI, August 1, 2008 — The YMCA of Honolulu is pleased to announce that Michael Chinaka, CPA, has joined its management group as chief financial officer.  Reporting to YMCA of Honolulu’s President and CEO Larry Bush, Chinaka is part of the Association’s executive team and has oversight responsibility for the organization’s accounting, information services, and human resources areas. Chinaka brings significant executive leadership, and more than 20 years of experience in accounting and finance for not-for-profit organizations and other local companies.

“Michael has tremendous experience in the financial and operational realms, which will be invaluable to us as we continue to build and strengthen our nine YMCA facilities, programs and services across Oahu,” said Larry Bush, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Honolulu. “His hands-on experience and relationships with local leaders and community organizations will help us expand our leadership role as one of the largest direct-service organizations in Hawaii.”

“I am excited to join the YMCA, an organization that has been the epicenter of community life for generations of Hawaii’s families,” said Chinaka. “I look forward to being a partner with the rest of the management team and the board of directors as we implement the YMCA’s financial and operational strategies.”

Prior to joining the YMCA of Honolulu, Chinaka served as vice president and treasurer of the Bishop Museum.  Since 2001, Chinaka was responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s accounting and finances, including asset management, with an operating budget of more than $16 million.  He was also the project coordinator for the construction of the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center building that opened its doors in 2005.

Chinaka also served as the director of finance for the Asia Pacific region of The Nature Conservancy, the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters. Previously, Chinaka served as vice president and chief financial officer for Creations in Catering, was the group controller for The Shildler Group, and held positions at Liberty Bank (American Savings Bank) and Arthur Young & Company (Ernst and Young). Chinaka is currently a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Chinaka is married to Amy Chinaka and has four children. They reside in the Kaimuki area.
