History
The YMCA of
Honolulu started bringing youth out to the camp property in 1926 for weekend
camping and leadership programs. In exchange for using the property owned by
Walter Dillingham, the YMCA youth planted trees around the property and the North Shore.
In 1931, Harold Randolf Erdman, nephew of Walther Dillingham was injured in a
horse polo accident and died a month after the injury occurred. Erdman was
married and had a three month old daughter. He was only 25 years old at the
time of his death. Shortly after, the Dillingham and Erdman families gave the
property to the YMCA with the request that the camp be named after their son
and nephew Harold Randolf Erdman.
