After-School Care

Kids Thrive in After-School Care

The benefits are limitless – children and teens receive individualized attention outside the classroom, helping to establish good homework habits and communication skills. In addition to the academic benefits, children also participate in outdoor activities, arts and crafts and games, improving their physical and mental development. The YMCA of Honolulu offers A+ after-school care at 47 sites across the island. Call your local Y to find a site convenient for you.

Jump In and Get Wet!

Swimming is an excellent way to stay healthy and active. Children and adults alike can benefit from learning to swim and building confidence in the water. We offer year-round swimming lessons, ranging from parent/tot classes for infants to progressive lessons for toddlers to adults. For those who are already experienced swimmers, we also offer swim clubs and aquatic exercise classes.

Visit your local Y or click for more information on classes and locations.

Let’s Move!

“Let’s Move!” - A Healthier Generation of Kids

The City and County of Honolulu and the YMCA of Honolulu are partnering in First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!”, a national campaign that will combat the epidemic of childhood obesity by mobilizing public and private sector resources, and providing schools, families and communities with simple tools to help kids be more active, eat better, and get healthy.

The YMCA of Honolulu has worked with the City and County of Honolulu and the Mayor’s office on similar initiatives in the past, producing “Healthy Honolulu Healthy Together”, a guide available to facilitators of community youth programs as a resource in the effort to support healthier generations. Health Tip of the Month: Burn 100 Calories Quick

Health Tip of the Month: Burn 100 Calories Quick

Burning an extra 100 calories a day may not seem important. What difference can 100 calories make? The answer is: 10 pounds.

One pound of fat is comprised of 3,500 calories that have been stored for energy. By burning an extra 100 calories a day, you will burn the equivalent of a pound of fat in 35 days. This means in a year you will have burned off the equivalent of about 10 pounds! Depending on your diet and current routine, you can avoid gaining weight or even potentially lose weight by paying attention to those extra 100 calories.

What are some activities you can do to burn those calories? Below is a list of suggested activity, suitable for most ages and fitness levels.

  • 40 minutes of grocery or window shopping
  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 25 minutes of playing ping pong
  • 20 minutes of doing chores around the house
  • 15 minutes of bicycling
  • 10 minutes of jumping rope
