THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR IS HERE!
We hope all of our families and children had a safe and super fun summer. Now it’s time to think about fall and winter activities for the kids. The YMCA offers before and after school programs, available at some branches and at more than 50 school sites across the island. The YMCA also offers preschool, teen and camp programs, plus fall and winter intersession programs. Contact your local YMCA youth department to find the program that’s right for your child or teen. YMCA TIP OF THE MONTH – 100 WAYS TO EAT HEALTHIER
With the kids back in school and parents busy working, the YMCA wants to help by providing key tips on healthy meals and snacks and weight management. Here are some highlights from the America On the Move Foundation and the YMCA of USA.
Maintaining a healthy weight depends on achieving energy balance – balancing the amount of energy burned and the food consumed in your day. To stop weight gain, most Americans need to do just two simple things:
- Add 2,000 more steps each day
- Eat 100 fewer calories daily
Read the full report of “100 Ways to Eat Healthier.” In this report, learn how to:
- Give your day a healthy start with breakfast tips
- Eat lighter lunches and downsized dinners
- Eat desserts without the guilt
- Drink lower calorie thirst quenchers
- Curb your hunger with healthy snack ideas
- Cut calories when dining out
Many individuals and families know they need to be more active and eat healthier, but often don’t know where or how to begin. Every year, every day, the YMCA helps get people started in the right direction—towards health and wellness. Starting out with small lifestyle changes keeps people motivated and leads to long-term sustainable habits and improved health.
