IT’S A CELEBRATION AND YOU’RE ALL INVITED – SATURDAY, JANUARY 10
Kick off 2009 by receiving the greatest New Year’s gift of all – the gift of healthy living! On Saturday, January 10, the first 50 people at each branch who upgrade their membership or join the YMCA will receive the “Get Real Weight Management” gift package, a comprehensive 4-week program (8 sessions) focused on helping you develop safe and healthy eating and exercising habits.
The fun and festivities at this year’s YMCA Community Open House will include kids’ and family activities, workout classes, and lots of great prizes from our friends at Jamba Juice and others. Join us from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the following branches: Central, Kaimuki-Waialae, Kalihi, Leeward, Mililani, Nuuanu and Windward. Go to www.ymcahonolulu.org for full details.
MAKING THE YMCA MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL
The last two words of the YMCA’s mission are “for all,” but we discovered that many families in our community are unable to participate due to costs and economic hardships. We wanted to find a way to make the YMCA affordable to everyone in order to fulfill that aspect of our mission. In January, the YMCA of Honolulu will launch “Membership For All,” an income-based, island-wide membership, based on your family’s household income. This is also good news for current members who want to retain their membership, but are struggling financially. Now all individuals will have an affordable place where they can work out and play with a healthier lifestyle in mind. Click for details.

HEALTHIER KIDS IN 90 DAYS!
This summer, in partnership with Mayor Mufi Hannemann and the City & Country of Honolulu’s Healthy Honolulu initiative, our YMCA Rural Youth Waipahu team launched an exciting new program called 90 Days. Targeting middle school students determined to change their lifestyles and levels of fitness, this after-school pilot program, has been developed to do just that. To expand the program, these teens will be mentors to preschool age children, share nutrition information and encourage physical activity. The teens will be implementing early childhood literacy packets developed by the YMCA that involves reading stories to their younger peers and engaging in play activities that support physical development and coordination.
This month, the first 90 Day graduates will be honored by Mayor Hannemann at City Hall for taking on this self-improvement challenge and for serving as positive young role models. In the next phase of the Healthy Honolulu - 90 Days Program, a toolkit/manual will be developed and made available for program replication by other service providers of teen programs. Stay tuned for updates.
