YMCA TIP OF THE MONTH – WATER SAFETY

As children and families go to the beach or water park, the YMCA would like to remind everyone to keep safety in mind. The YMCA of Honolulu’s Aquatics Program offers the following tips to help keep children and families safe and injury-free in the water this summer:

Water Safety
  • Learn to swim. The best thing you can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim—it’s never too late.
  • Only swim where a lifeguard is on duty.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Read and follow all rules and signs.
  • Constantly watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a “water watcher” so everyone knows who is “on duty.”
  • Keep children who cannot swim within arm’s reach of an adult in the water.
  • Children and inexperienced swimmers should take precautions, such as wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD) when around the water.
  • Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.
  • Enter water feet first unless in a designated diving area.

The YMCA of Honolulu helps people of all ages, especially children and families, learn basic swimming skills and water safety practices through group, individual and swim team programs. To learn more or sign up visit www.ymcahonolulu.org/aquatics.

Enjoy your summer months and keep working to stay healthy and safe!
