Certification Opportunities
The YMCA of Honolulu offers several exciting opportunities to join our team and become a certified YMCA instructor in: Aquatic Life guarding, Personal Training, and Group Exercise. If you’re interested in becoming Group Exercise and/or Personal Trainer certified and have no experience, we’ll help you with that and link you up with the facility of your choice to join our mentoring program. Foundation of YMCA Group Exercise
Course content includes the practical application of cardio respiratory and neuromuscular exercise science, leadership and teaching skills for group exercise instructors, behavior modification and motivation information, and a practical session on general exercise selection and execution. Written test included. 9 hours in length. Pre-requisites: CPR, YMCA Healthy Lifestyles and Principles and read manual.

Healthy Lifestyles and Principals
This course provides practical and theoretical information for instructors of all YMCA health and fitness programs, including information on effective leadership, basic physical activity and healthy lifestyles principles, and program safety guidelines. It also covers the YMCA mission, philosophy and national program training and certification system. 4 hours in length. Pre-requisite: Proof of 18 years of age.

Pilates Instructor
This course teaches YMCA Pilates instructors the basic biomechanics and philosophical principles of Pilates exercise. Participants will learn a series of Pilates mat exercises which are designed to improve muscle strength and flexibility, balance, posture, and overall well-being. Also includes information on how to incorporate Pilates exercises into effective group exercise and personal training programs. Practical session included.

Step and Cardio Instructor
Course content includes movement choreography and pattern development, skills for teaching group aerobic classes to 32 ct. phrasing, class structure and components, practical sessions and practical examination. 9 hours in length. Pre-requisites: CPR, Healthy Lifestyles and Principles, Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise.

YMCA Foundations in Strength and Conditioning
Course content includes effective goal setting, communication and motivation strategies for working with members, muscle anatomy and physiology, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular training techniques. Practical sessions using various exercise equipment, case studies, and a written and practical exam. 16 hours in length. Pre-requisites: CPR, YMCA Healthy lifestyles and Principles and read manual.
