Building A Better Central Y For You
As you know, our Central Y, at 62 years old, is our oldest Y. As you recall, we had a contract to sell a portion of our land to a developer who would build a high rise condo. More important for us, the same developer would demolish the existing Central Y, and build a new 30,000 square foot Y on the site allowing us to continue to serve urban Honolulu.
Unfortunately, the redevelopment of the Central Y has been delayed. We are unable to provide additional details at this time, but hope to be able to provide a status update by the end of the year.
In the meantime, although we closed the Central Y on February 28, 2015, we have continued to keep our resident facility open during this extended period because that portion of the building is in good repair.
The poor condition of the rest of the building which includes the fitness facility, pool, gym and locker rooms, makes re-opening cost prohibitive.
We have also set aside a portion of our room inventory to assist Helping Hands Hawaii and the Institute of Human Services in providing temporary housing for families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness into permanent housing. The children, families and individuals we have been able to help, as you can imagine, have been extremely thankful and hopeful for a better future.
We appreciate your support as we continue to work towards building a brand new Central Y.
