The goal of Aikido training is to harmonize with the flow of universal energy (also known as “ki”) and improve one’s character. Aikido focuses on self-defense, mind/body coordination, discipline, awareness, concentration, confidence, and respect. Available at the Kalihi Y for ages 6 and up and Nu‘uanu Y for ages 4-17.
With an emphasis on fun and physical activity, judo provides a means for learning and improving one’s self-discipline, character, self-defense, and physical endurance. Available at the Kaimuki-Waialae Y for ages 8 and up and Mililani Y for ages 6 and up.
Jiu Jitsu is a predominantly ground-based martial art, using the principles of leverage, angles, pressure, and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy, to achieve a non-violent submission of one’s opponent. Available at the Nu‘uanu Y for ages 4 and up, on Sundays, 9:30 am - 11 am. Fee is $60 per month for Y members, otherwise $80 per month.
Karate helps increase confidence and discipline, improve concentration, build good sportsmanship and character, improve coordination, reflexes, and overall fitness. Shotokan karate is available at the Mililani-West Oahu Y for ages 6 and up. Beginner and intermediate karate is available at the Nu‘uanu Y for ages 4-17.
