Youth & Government program helps develop active citizens and leaders

The Hawai‘i Youth & Government (YAG) program provides middle and high school students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, explore government and advocacy, and represent their communities through local, state, and national experiences.

The Youth & Government program helps teens to:

  • Develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration
  • Learn about government, advocacy, and civic responsibility
  • Build confidence and connect with peers from across Hawai‘i
  • Engage in hands-on leadership and community impact opportunities
  • Explore future career pathways and professional networks

Young people can choose how to participate in the program

Legislature

Students create, debate, and vote on bills focused on issues impacting Hawai‘i. Students attend training and workshops to help prepare them to become part of the YAG Conference experience.

Changemakers

Students collaborate to design projects that address challenges within their communities. Selected projects may receive funding support and opportunities for national presentation.

Youth Advocacy

Students engage in local, state, and national efforts to raise awareness and advocate for issues that matter to them.

Program includes:

  • Training sessions and workshops
  • Program materials and merchandise
  • Access to YMCA Youth & Government national opportunities
  • Youth & Government conference experiences, including accommodations, meals, transportation, and programming

Need-based financial assistance is available.
